Sub-categories

Because websites come in many flavours, I have broken then down into sub-categories that describe the content and functionality featured on the websites in my project profiles.

Brochureware
A simple website that takes the place of a printed brochure. These websites contain basic information about products or services, but little or no interactive functionality. The purpose is to introduce the visitor to the organisation and entice them to make contact.
Childrens
A website designed specifically for children. Normally the aim is to entertain visitors and create an affinity with the product or brand. Common functionality includes interactive games and competitions.
eCommerce
A website which enables visitors to purchase products or services. These websites are usually part of a business website or closely associated with one (ie a microsite linked to from a corporate home page).
Extranet
A website which merges the purpose of an intranet and public website. These websites are usually designed to allow external parties, such as business partners or trusted customers, to gain access to an organisation’s intranet from outside the internal network.
Information
A website which provides the visitor with informaiton about products or services offered by an organisation, or about the organisation itself. These websites typically contain more information than a brochureware website, often containing dynamic content (ie “data driven”). Many organisations have this type of website for their main website.
Interactive
A website which focuses on interactive functionality, as well as static information. These websites are often community or collaboration platforms, allowing visitors to not only interact with the content but also with each other. Examples of common interactivity include: music/video, calculators, maps, databases, virtual reality.
Intranet
A private website that is internal to an organisation and used exclusively by it’s staff. These websites typically feature business-centric content such as news, policies and procedures and organisational information.
Microsite
A small website that is attached to a larger website, often featuring important or independant content and functionality. These websites are often used as tools to allow visitors to complete a specific task, such as completing a survey or view temporary information.
Personal
A website featuring the work or profile of an individual as opposed to an organisation. These websites are often used as online portfolios, such as the website you are currently visiting.
Promotional
A small website built specifically to promote a product, service or announcement. These websites are often very similar to microsites, but are usually made available for short periods of time. Common functionality includes competition entry forms, video clips and downloadable gadgets.
